ESSAY 24
THE "SITUATIONAL ETHICS" MYTH
Dr. Frederic Loomis almost permitted a deformed baby to
die during birth. The little girl only had one leg. It was
a breech birth and a stillbirth would be easy to justify. He
would be preventing much suffering and inconvenience, he be-
gan to rationalize. At the last moment he found that he
could not permit her to die.
Seventeen years later he attended a Christmas party.
A beautiful young lady played the harp skillfully. He
noticed that she had an artificial leg. Her mother approached
the obstetrician and reminded him that he had delivered her.
The talented young lady had been the baby girl he had been
tempted to let die. (James Dobson, FOCUS ON THE FAMILY,
December, 1994
Situational ethics is being taught in many schools. One
teacher presented the following historical scenario before her
class:
How would you advise a mother who was pregnant
with her fifth child based on the following facts:
Her husband had syphilis. She had tuberculosis.
Their first child was born blind. Their second
child died. Their third child was born deaf. Their
fourth child had tuberculosis. The mother is con-
sidering an abortion.
Would you advise her to have one?
Most of the students agreed that she should have an
abortion. The teacher announced,
If you said `yes,' you would have just killed
the great composer Ludwig van Beethoven!
